This session provides an in-depth overview of the enhanced Vertere Chemical Inventory System, supporting safe, compliant, and efficient research operations across the Faculty of Science. Participants will learn practical skills to manage their inventories in real time, prevent high-risk disposal scenarios, and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.

Training Objectives

  • Understand why accurate chemical inventory is essential for safety, compliance, and cost control

  • Learn how to log in using the new uOttawa SSO access system

  • Use the hazard and expiry alert widgets to prevent hazardous conditions and costly chemical disposal

  • View, search, and export your inventory data

  • Properly transfer chemical ownership and locations

  • Accurately dispose of chemicals within the system to prevent “ghost bottles”

  • Use the mobile app for barcode scanning, sub-location transfers, and real-time updates

  • Understand how Vertere supports peroxide-former tracking, hazard programs, and onboarding of new trainees

This session is open to all researchers, but strongly recommended for:

  • Principal Investigators (PIs)

  • Lab Managers, Lab Coordinators

  • Senior graduate students or postdocs who assist with training or chemical management

  • Anyone responsible for maintaining an up-to-date laboratory inventory

  • 60-minute instructor-led session

  • Live demonstration of workflow: login → search → transfer → dispose → mobile tools

  • Opportunity for QA with Health Safety staff
