Laboratory Safety Orientation

Description

Description

This Laboratory Safety video provides an introduction to, and awareness of, general hazards and laboratory safety applicable in laboratories across the University of Ottawa, for non-lab employees

This Laboratory Safety Orientation is intended for non-lab employees that may enter labs as part of their work (ex: trades, operations, IT, etc.) to provide services such as caretaking, repairs/maintenance, design and project management, consulting, etc. that may complete their work in active research labs which contain:

  • Chemical (e.g. toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, explosive, corrosive)
  • Biological (e.g. infectious agents, allergens, toxins)
  • Physical (e.g. sharps, glassware, pressurized gases, radiation, flame, equipment)

This orientation provides an overview of the hazards, entry requirements and safety measures present in laboratories across campus. It is a pre-requisite (not a substitute) for lab specific information. Persons entering laboratories are required to coordinate entry and activities with the area (lab) supervisor before entering lab areas.

External service providers (e.g., contractors and consultants) engaged by the University for a variety of services are also required to view this video, as available on our vendor management/contractor safety website.
