The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada offers scholarships to outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and success in this highly competitive environment is often determined by a “game of inches.” As such, a carefully planned and executed application can greatly increase your chances of being funded. This hands-on workshop will outline strategies for writing competitive NSERC applications, and provide insights into how your application will be reviewed and evaluated at the MSc, PhD, and PDF level.

At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Characterize the evaluation criteria used by NSERC at the MSc, PhD, and PDF level, in order to tailor their application for maximum effectiveness
  2. Formulate research objectives and communicate them clearly and succinctly, in order to write an effective NSERC research proposal
  3. Critique research proposals, in order to understand how their proposals will be critically evaluated by NSERC committees.
