This hands-on workshop is geared to graduate students interested in quantitative analysis and visualization of texts to gain a new perspective or complement their qualitative analysis or close reading of novels, web sites, news stories, academic articles, annual reports etc. We will introduce you to some basic concepts and considerations of text analysis by working with the Voyant Tools. You may bring your own collection of electronic texts or work with a sample corpus.  

Absolutely no prior experience is necessary.

Objectives:

  • Learn to identify and clean up potential digital texts prior to analysis.

  • Learn more about stop words, text density, collocates, raw vs relative frequency and related topics in text analysis.

  • Build confidence that you can use Voyant to analyse your text as well as export and share your work with others.
